Overview
Supporting documents can be submitted to Inland Revenue at the same time as income tax returns, using e-file. This is useful if you have documents such as financial statements, to submit. Inland Revenue will not review these documents before assessing an income tax return, so any correspondence, or documents that will impact the assessment will need to instead be submitted directly via myIR.
Attach documents for e-filing
- From the navigation bar, select Workpapers > Filing and Payment Schedule.
- Upload the documents that are to be e-filed to the Files tab.
- Once uploaded, select the settings cog and select Add to Efile.
- Documents appearing in the Available tab can be attached to the return task. Select the settings cog and then select Attach to this return task.
Documents that have been added to e-file will display a green badge titled 'Attached'.
Remove documents for e-filing
- Select the settings cog next to the file.
- Select Remove from E-file.
When documents have been successfully filed, they will populate under the Documents section of Step 1 - Ready to Sign with a Document ID and confirmation they have been received by IR will display next to each document.
Timing of document filing
First, the tax return is filed with Inland Revenue. Once the tax return has been successfully filed, the documents are then submitted. There may be a delay between when the tax return is filed and when the documents are filed. If Inland Revenue holds the return for manual processing, the documents will only be filed once Inland Revenue has processed the return.
In the event that the tax return encounters an error, the documents will not be filed until the return is successfully filed.
Limitations on documents
- Only PDF files can be attached for e-filing.
- File size must be less than 9Mb.
- File name must be less than 255 characters.
